Our 2021 Summer Internship Program is underway!

Text
Summer is our favorite season for many reasons: the sun is shining; the weather is warm; weekend getaways are aplenty...but perhaps nothing excites us more than welcoming our summer interns to MarketAxess! And while this summer’s program is (mostly) virtual, we’re still making the most of it and delivering the best experience we possibly can to this talented group of students.
Our program by the numbers...
- 32 interns, spanning 3 continents
- 25 different universities represented
- 6 MarketAxess departments supported
Here’s a rundown of what our internship program looks like this year:
Our nine-week summer internship program kicked off globally on June 7th with a full week of onboarding to expose the interns to our various functions and departments – plus to hear from our most senior executives and ask them questions. One of the most special things about working at MarketAxess is our flat nature and access to our senior leaders. This is why we make it a priority for our interns to be able to experience this too, so they get a real sense of what being a part of the company is all about. It was amazing to see the energy our interns brought from day 1, and it didn’t take long for them to impress us. Roxanne Jackson, our head of US campus recruiting shared, “The questions that were asked during the sessions have always been well-thought out and impressive, but even our presenters remarked on how great the questions were this time around."
Over the course of the summer, we want to ensure our interns feel supported, which is why, in addition to having a manager, they're assigned two mentors to help them navigate the experience. Our campus recruiting team also hosts virtual weekly office hours, which gives the interns the ability to “stop by” and raise any questions or concerns.
In addition to their day-to-day work on their respective teams, which is intended to be a good preview of what working at MarketAxess at full time would resemble, we also provide the interns with plenty of opportunities to learn about other areas of the company. What used to be our Lunch and Learn series – now called “Virtual Hours” – exposes the interns to various topics, like cloud engineering, corporate governance (led by our CEO and our lead MarketAxess board member!), and more.
One of the most exciting aspects of the summer internship program is the group project, where our interns work together to make a recommendation for an enhancement to our platform to our Global Management Team (our senior executives). This allows our interns to develop their presentation skills and have further exposure to our most senior leaders, while also working on a meaningful, real-world challenge that has the potential to have a major impact on our business. Talk about a win-win!
While we certainly keep our interns busy, it wouldn’t be the true MarketAxess experience without fun social events and team bonding activities throughout the summer. Some of these will be taking place virtually, while others will happen in person for those that are comfortable attending. The program culminates with our “Intern Finale”, an end-of-summer-party, which is a chance for interns, their managers and mentors, and our executives to come together and celebrate a successful summer. No better way to cap off the program!
Despite the virtual nature of this summer's program (although some interns have been lucky enough to visit our offices), “I am so impressed even in a virtual internship environment across 3 continents, the interns have formed bonds with each other. It just goes to show you that you can bond even if you’ve never met each other physically,” shares Roxanne.
Instead of us simply telling you about what it’s like to intern here day-to-day, later this summer we’ll share videos of our interns speaking to their experience firsthand. Stay tuned!
